Project Description
Port Reading Junction is the point where parent railroads Norfolk Southern Corp. and CSX Transportation enter the Conrail system.  This busy junction serves approximately forty trains per day which haul freight inland to the tri-state area and beyond.  The existing rail configuration could accommodate only one train at a time creating a problematic bottleneck.  The goal of this project was to eliminate that chokepoint by expanding rail capacity from the existing one track to multiple tracks. 

Over 2,400 TF of new track was constructed along with four #20 crossovers and two #20 turnouts.  The new layout also required the replacement of over 1,200 ties and the installation of thirty new insulated joints.  All construction took place in direct proximity to active tracks with frequent train traffic.  In order to maintain rail service, our work was performed in stages requiring aggressive scheduling and coordination with Conrail’s signal forces.  During select outages, major work items such as crossovers and turnouts were completed.

Despite tight work windows, the project was delivered on time.  This new track configuration has improved the efficiency of freight traffic for several railroads.
