Project Description

This New Jersey Transit project connected the Bergen Line and the Main Line through the construction of a new connector track and viaduct. Structural rehabilitation was required across the entire structure due to deteriorated steel. A 20’ x 100’ span was removed from the bridge structure and new steel was installed. Two additional Main Line tracks were added through the Transfer Station. In total, almost 8,000 TF of track were removed and 28,000 TF of new track was installed. A new viaduct bridge structure through the Meadowlands was constructed requiring pipe piles, precast concrete pile caps, box beams, caissons and reinforcing steel.

A highlight of this project was our ability to perform the work around four active tracks. Our design of a support system which carried the load of the entire structure enabled the heavy New York City commuter traffic to be maintained without stoppages. This allowed us to remove bearings and install new pads and bearings without the need to shut down service on the tracks.
